Friends Luncheon & Workshop January 23

j_fletcher_money_tree-small.jpgDon't miss this great day, where we'll conduct system business in the morning (bring your lay rep and you have the chance to win a Wii from the Friends of CTLS!), the Friends luncheon, and a free Friends workshop on fundraising in the afternoon. All events will be held at the beautiful Bee Cave Public Library, including a silent auction. Register now!

Year of the Friends!

The Chair of the CTLS Board of Directors, Peggy Gibson, has declared FY 2009 to be “The Year of the Friends”! This year-long celebration will honor the important contributions that the many Friends groups, volunteers, board members, and citizens make to the success of public libraries in our region. A new CTLS Awards Program will recognize the hard work and accomplishments of your library’s special angels with 3 new System awards to be presented January 23, 2009, at the Friends Luncheon. The categories for recognition are:

- Friends Project of the Year
- Library Board Member of the Year
- Teen Volunteer of the Year

An awards committee will develop a nomination process and will select the friends group and individuals to be honored. Expect more details at the September 26th Membership Meeting in Taylor. Dovetailing with our special year-long celebration is the generous support of the Friends of CTLS for a number of activities that directly benefit member libraries and their staff. These will begin September 26th when the FOCTLS will give away a Nintendo Wii gaming system to a member library. To be eligible for this free drawing, member libraries must have a Lay Representative present. A random drawing of Lay Representatives’ yellow paddles will determine which library will take home the Wii. If you don’t win, don’t despair! The FOCTLS will offer another opportunity for a member to win a Wii at the January 23rd Membership Meeting in Bee Cave.

Supporting continuing education for CTLS members is high on the list of priorities for the FOCTLS. Since the System will charge for continuing education events in FY 2009, the Friends have agreed to award special CE stipends which will enable members to attend at least 1 CTLS workshop during the fiscal year. Twenty stipends of $50 each will be provided to members who need this support to attend System training events. The Friends will develop an application process, review applications, and notify successful recipients prior to the training date. The Friends will also support 2 workshops which will be free of charge for all member library staff during the fiscal year. Those workshops will coincide with the September 2008 and January 2009 Membership Meetings.

Perhaps the most wide-reaching project of the Friends is their generous support for the “23 Things” on-line workshop scheduled to run for 9 weeks in December and January. “23 Things” is a discovery learning program designed to encourage staff to explore new technologies and reward them for participating in the 23 exercises that comprise the program’s curriculum. The “23 Things” kick-off event coincides with the CTLS Technology Conference November 14 in Georgetown. This workshop will introduce library staff to 23 web 2.0 technologies that are used by the public. The first 100 library staff members that complete the on-line program will receive a reward. The Friends of CTLS will pay for these and at least ˝ of the prizes will be reserved for libraries serving populations of fewer than 25,000.

Staff members who complete the program will be able to select one of the following items: an MP3 player or a choice of $25 gift card from Best Buy, Target, or Wal-Mart. 2009 promises to be a memorable year as we celebrate the many Friends that make public libraries and service in those libraries unique and rewarding. Come join us for the first Membership Meeting of FY 2009 as we meet in Taylor to share successes and reinforce our commitment to our communities, our libraries, and each other.
